HOW IT STARTED
I do not think I’m alone in perceiving an escalation of animosity between members of law enforcement and the communities they serve. After members of an agency I was recently a sworn member of were murdered on duty, I began to think about what could be done to assist in a solution rather than reiterate the problems. My intent is to avoid debate as to the cause and focus on things that the law enforcement community can control.

Violence, as recorded by the news or public, is inherently dramatic and for most people it is disturbing. I think the public expects uncontrolled emotion only on one side of the conflict. When law enforcement appears to have lost emotional control public perception of law enforcement suffers.
What follows is solely my opinion based on my experiences as a sworn member of two municipal departments, one county agency, and one federal agency. I have attended two formal police academies and after my transition to medicine as a physician, I have maintained both operational and training relationships with multiple agencies.
